The title of this essay will probably remind my readers of a happening which received much publicity and aroused strong feeling in late 1979, and which may well have been followed by further and broadly similar happenings by the time this book appears in print. The event which I have in mind looked - to many people - like a head-on collision between Church authority and intellectual freedom.
