<note>The New Testament Apocrypha consists of documents sometimes similar in form to the documents of the New Testament but not included in the canon. In date they extend over several centuries and in content they range from fairly 'orthodox' but legendary expansion of the canonical books to literature composed in the interests of some heretical sect. The various articles have been written by a team of contributors that includes, among others, Oscar Cullmann, Joachim Jeremias and Wilhelm Schneemelcher himself. These men present a survey of the whole field, including such recent discoveries as the Nag Hammadi Library, discussed in a section on Gnostic gospels by H. C. Puech. They also review the various theories and hypotheses advanced by modern scholars in relation to these texts.</note>
