In a study as brief as this, it is not possible to cover the whole field of Christian poetry, to examine its manifestations in every country and every century. Such as attempt would be not only futile, but fruitless. At the best, it would produce a mere catalogue of names and dates, and at the worst, an essay so densely packed with mere facts and opinions that, after examining it, the reader would be none the wiser.
