It is mostly a matter of orientation and illustration, a sort of bridge between the common reader and the world of Biblical scholarship. Contemporary research has rendered distinguished service to the Bible. It seems fitting that the layman should share in the fruits of that research so that he may come to a fuller understanding of the Word of God.
