Not the Whole Truth

John Heenan's desire to become a priest was for many years a secret between his mother and himself. His mother used it as a gentle form of blackmail. When I was late, ill-tempered, greedy, untidy or otherwise unbearable my mother would remind me that if I was to become a priest I had to be punctual, good-tempered, unselfish, tidy and, in general, insufferably, virtuous.
