For decades exegetes have made fruitful use of the study of literary forms to shed light on the biblical text. In recent years great attention has been focused on the literary genre Midrash, and what is Midrash? In attempting to explain it, scholars have presented a wide and confusing spectrum of interpretations. Consequently, there is a pressing need to clarify what we mean, or should mean, when we use the term.
