Isaiah and the Assyrian Crisis
Few problems within the Old Testament have evoked such a steady stream of monographs and articles as has the account of the Assyrian invasion of Palestine in 701. It has become a classic issue on which each new generation of biblical scholars seems constrained to test its mettle. The reason why this problem has not been allowed to rest, but continues to offer its challenge are not difficult to discover. In the first place, there are so many accounts of Sennacherib's invasion and they are given in such detail within the bible that event has assumed an importance by its very frequency. Secondly, the history of the Assyrian invasion is recorded also in the annals of Sennacherib which have been preserved in various editions and copies.
