I & II Samuel: The Way to the Throne
That part of the books of Samuel which most gives the impression of compactness and inner consistency is the so-called History of Succession (19-20) and it is convenient to begin our study from this nucleus. There is general agreement that the Narrative of succession is a connected and unified piece of writing and it has been customary to suppose that it is the work of a single author and that it is contemporary or nearly contemporary with the events which it describes.
