This book is the outcome of a well-known polemical argument. But it is not a polemical work. And still less a pamphlet aimed against Pius XII. If such it were, it would not have taken so long to see the light. Though I was continually urged to write such a work. I had no ambition to join in the choirs of dissonant voices merely so as not to be absent from the records.
