The six Lectures which compose the present volume were the first that instituted at the College de France in terms of the Michonis endowment, and were delivered in 1905. Their subject the religion of the old Egyptians covers too wide a field and raises too many different questions to permit us to make a complete study of it in so small a compass, or to enter into all the discussions to which this religion has given rise. For this reason I have endeavoured, in this volume, to keep these studies in the character and form of lectures; in this respect I have really made almost no change.
