The documentary source for a study of St. Paul of the Cross are overwhelming in size and completeness. The transcription of sworn evidence in the Processes for his canonisation fills twenty-two manuscript volumes of about 800 pages each. These include the Processes of Alessandria, Gaeta and Orbetello, with the Ordinary and the Apostolic Processes of Rome, Vetralla, Viterbo and Corneto. More than one hundred witnesses who knew St. Paul of the Cross were examined, and the detailed nature of the evidence is apparent from the length of the depositions.
