This book provides an introduction to the whole question of the role and place of the Spirit in the New Testament as well as an analysis of the Paraclete passages. The Paraclete sayings are examined in their setting in the Farewell Discourse in John, investigating the Pre-Christian background of the sayings and the relation of the Paraclete to the Spirit known in the Christian community, and exploring the question of the place of the Spirit in the ministry of the historical Jesus.
