<note>A saint, even a simple saint as Don Bosco was, is a complex figure because he lives so close to God and absorbs so much from that intimate union. Having absorbed so much of the divine, a saint does extraordinary things that seem to him so obvious. We lesser mortals spend a lifetime trying to understand what they really did and said. This is exactly what has happened as regards St. John Bosco's philosophy of education. When asked to put down in writing in what this philosophy really consisted, he answered that he did not really think he had a philosophy. He just did whatever God prompted him to do for His greater glory and the salvation of souls. It was just a part of that intangible 'salesian spirit' which pervaded all works.</note>
