To most of us the expression 'the French Revolution' conjures up a picture of the guillotine and tumbrils, of ragged revolutionary troops, of the Scarlet Pimpernel and A Tale of Two Cities. Historians see it as a turning-point in European history and the beginning of a new age, often confusingly spoken of as the age liberalism or democracy.
