De La Salle: Meditations

De La Salle: Meditations is a translation and reworking of John Baptist de La Salle's spiritual meditations, primarily intended for Christian educators (especially the Brothers of Christian Schools). Battersby's 1953 edition played a key role in the revival of Lasalian spirituality in the 20th century.

The book is a collection of meditations structured around the liturgical year and retreats, helping readers reflect deeply on their faith in the context of everyday life, particularly in the world of education.

The book's main ideas include a) the vocation as an educator as a divine mission, where teachers are seen as God's instruments for guiding and saving children's souls; b) an emphasis on God's presence in everyday life, especially in the task of teaching and educating; c) love for children, especially the poor, as a concrete form of service to Christ; d) the importance of a life of prayer, reflection, and spiritual discipline for educators; and e) a theocentric and Christocentric spirituality, guided by the Holy Spirit, in the work of education.

In his meditations, De La Salle frequently uses Scripture reflectively (through paraphrases and reflections), inviting readers not only to understand faith intellectually but also to live it out in concrete actions.

Overall, this book presents a spirituality unique to Christian educators, combining faith, education, and social service. Through profound reflection, readers are invited to see that the task of educating is not simply a profession, but a spiritual calling to bring God into the lives of children.
