The topics selected-penance, extreme unction and indulgences- are intimately related, both historically and doctrinally, and usually form a single unit in Catholic manuals of theology. Historically, extreme unction appears in the context of clinical or sickbed penance; indulgences have their historical antecedents in the assistance which the early Church gave to public penitents prior to their reconciliation.
