Despite this impressive fact, Sidgwick was not a typical Victorian for he lacked almost completely the Victorian attitude of certainty. Sidgwick was in many ways ahead of his time. He set the style of thinking now associated with Cambridge philosophy. We have chosen Henry Sidgwick because he seems to have succesfully reconciled intuitional or common sense morality the nineteenth century opponent to utilitarianism with utilitarian principles, or at least has been credited with so doing.
