When I began to collect and edit the various studies that make up this volume. I wondered whether there would be a common thread running through the individual essays something that would supply the semblance of a coherent whole. After all, these studies stretch over some fifteen years (1973-1988) and were originally intended for a wide variety of audiences. Most of these essays are scholarly pieces presupposing a fair knowledge of present day Scripture research.
