In this commentary on the Johannine epistles, Kenneth Grayston reformulates some accepted views in Johannine scholarship, but never without respect for other commentators with whom he has come to disagree. The aim of the commentary is to involve the reader in the effort of trying to understand these New Testament writings in their appropriate cultural situation. The commentator need not be a preacher or a moralist, writers Grayston; if he has done his work adequately, his readers will themselves perceive questions of faith morals.
