<note>If, as many theologians now suppose, the Chalcedonian Definition is no longer and adequate statement of the nature of the person of Christ, not least because it relies on evidence, like that of the Fourth Gospel, now considered historically inadmissible, what is the Status and the relation to believers, of the risen and exalted Jesus Christ? That is the question with which this book is concerned. After considering recent studies which lead him to pose the problem in this way. Professor Hanson examines the traditional doctrine of the Risen Christ, from the Fathers, through Thomas Aquinas and the Reformation to be present day. He shows what in intractable problem has been presented by the question of the risen body of Christ, apart from the eucharist. This leads him to conclude that we should not claim that as a result of the incarnation humanity is more closely associated with the Godhead or that Christians have access to God by means of Jesus risen humanity. Still less does he believe that we should be concerned to link the risen body of Jesus in some way either to the church or to the eucharist.</note>
