<note>Ashley Montague (formerly Ehrenberg) was a cultural anthropologist best known for his work on race and his landmark work, Man's Most Dangerous Myth; The Fallacy of Race (1942). His later works on the position of humans on the cultural scale culminated in this 1958 volume. Montague wrote, The principal mark of the cultured man is not so much knowledge as his attitude of mind in relating his knowledge to the world of experience, A 'cultured man' would be curious, unprejudiced, rational, and ethical. In the first part of the volume, Montague describes the failings of certain parts of the American psyche… and seems to be grim in outlook; in the second part, there is a quiz of sorts, asking many questions based on knowledge and experience. Perhaps this volume cannot teach someone to be a cultured man – or woman – however, it may point him or her in the correct direction. Interesting idea.</note>
