<note>Spirituality and Mysticism words that conjure up things otherworldly and esoteric but also, as every publisher well knows, sell books! Although the latter goal is not beyond the wishes of Orbis Books, what this study shows is that Christian spirituality and mysticism are anything but esoteric and otherworldly. Rather, 'spirituality', as James Wiseman argues along with many other contemporary theologians, means for Christian nothing more and nothing less than a striving for an intense union with God the Father through the Son Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit. As for 'mysticism', it is not to be contrasted with the 'ordinary' way of Christian life and associated with extraordinary phenomena such as vision, ecstasy, levitation and the like. On the contrary, it is understood to refer to our consciousness of and reaction to the immediate presence of God that is in principle available to all Christians.</note>
