<note>Explanations of the motivations for deviance have taken various forms. Some observers would place the blame on a defective family structure or arrested personality adjustment; others would emphasize such conditions as poverty or racism; and there are proponents of the thesis that individuals are born deviant. It should be recognized, however, that no single factor can adequately explain why actors commit deviant acts. For example, what we generally find in the area of delinquency research is that a combination of family, school and peer variables seems to make the most sense in providing motivations for youth crime and deviance.</note>
