<note>In her paper in this volume. Anna Marie A. Karaos speaks of the social Democratic movement in the Philippines as coming from activist reformers in the Federation of Free Farmers, Federation of Free Workers, Christian Social Movement. These organizations for social reform find their roots, in turn, in the pioneering efforts of Father Joseph Mulry and others as the Ateneo de Manila of the 1930's to bring about labor and agrarian reform along the lines of Catholic Social Teaching. In a typical radio play of that period, 'They Hunger for the Land', we find the protagonist, Antonio, arguing for agrarian reform as an imperative of Church social teaching and the Gospel, against his father who sees such thoughts as products of communist agitators. Fifty years later, the voices in those plays still sound so contemporary.</note>
