<note>During the past few decades, there has been a long overdue resurgence of interest in the problem of God and evil. The traditional answers are being challenged by growing numbers of theologians and philosophers. This book examines the various contributions of these contemporary writers and considers also the views of others who defend the more traditional answers. In responding to the question of why an all-powerful and all loving God allows so much evil and misery in the world, Christian theologians and philosophers have, of course, provided a variety of answers. Yet theological reflection on this problem lags far behind other concerns, despite the fact that our greatest theological minds have recognized that in order to cope with anguish and suffering, a rational understanding of this problem is essential for all those who believe in God. Faith seeks and demands some rational underpinning.</note>
