The above research project concerned the state of the becak (pedicab or three-cycle) as a non motorized vehicle and its role in the urban transportation system in Indonesia. The project was also looking at the various aspects of the life of becak drivers, generally slum dwellers socially located at the bottom of society. Mention should be made of a similar research work done by staf members of the Department of Planology at the Institute of Technology Bandung who concerned themselves with the becak transportation in Bandung. The Low Cost Transportation Project was instigated and funded by the International Development Research Centre of Canada.
