The Other Side of Development: Social-Psychological Implications
Whenever development is discussed it is almost always in terms of the economic dimension or in a public policy perspective. Yet, the process of development also has many other facets which are rarely considered. One of the more important of these neglected areas is the psycho social consequences of development and it is this important aspect to which this collection of essays addresses itself. It is a truism that economic development alone cannot facilitate intellectual and emotional growth. Indeed, development has a direct impact on the norms, the values, the psychological well being and life styles of a society. There are, for example, definite linkages between the tendency to violate (or deviate from) social norms and the social processes that are set in motion by the economic development of a society.
