The two studies which we are presenting in this text comprised the two main pillars of a Colloquium on Human Rights which was organized in 1988 by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. It was the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Encyclical Pacem in Terris, where John XXIII presented a real charter of human rights and duties for building peace on earth.
