The churches which for centuries have been the focal point so much dispute and violet conflict in Europe have now become, apart from much publicized papal visits and similar occasions, a matter of indifference, and their message is muted. However, along with this lowering of profile, an important positive development has come about. The churches have, by and large, come to accept one another as they are, pluriform and diverse, and have stopped thinking in quasi-imperialistic terms. And this is all the good.
