Preaching the New and the Now
According to David Buttrick, the image of the kingdom of God has all but disappeared in twentieth-century preaching, erased by two world wars and the Great Depression as well as by our focus on the biblical past and the isolation of biblical history from human history. Buttrick believes that as we move into a new century the church and preaches must recapture the kingdom's farsighted vision and find forgotten social courage. In this book, he critiques the state of the church, society, and preaching today and discusses Old and New Testament understanding of the kingdom of God and the tensions between kingdom and church. The kingdom is now, he argues, and he explores the homiletical task of preaching the kingdom today.
