Children and Television
We devote more man hours per year to television than any other single artifact. Its not surprising that books about television are now quite numerous. But it is surprising, to me at least, that so few books have been published which deal with children and television. Although a few new texts have emerged recently they are, in the main, focused on children's exposure to televised violence and the consequences of such exposure. In part this is because a considerable proportion of the total research budget has been directed to this area. Nevertheless, since Hilde Himmelweit's classic British study of the effect upon children of the onset of television there has steadily accumulated a 'literature' on children and television. Since no specialist journals exist for the area, and since researches themselves are likely to come from different disciplines, their published output is often difficult to locate.
