Introduction to the Old Testament: A Presentation of its Results and Problems
When there are already quite a number of Old Testament Introductions available in English, several of them translations from German, the publication of a new one must justify itself by he quality of the work. Professor Kaiser's Introduction, first published in Germany in 1969 and now translated from the second edition of 1970 with subsequent corrections, stands out in two ways. First, on many points where a reigning orthodoxy has grown up, Professor Kaiser is prepared to take his own line and give arguments for a different conclusion. Secondly, rather than present all critical positions as certain, he strikes out on a new course in introductions by indicating the development of critical work, underlining the provisional nature of many of the conclusions now widely held, and pointing clearly to unsolved problems and lines of inquiry which await future scholarly work.
