There are so many guide books to the Holy Land and works on the life and teaching of Jesus some of them of high quality that it is best to explain why the present volume came to be written. One reason is that I do not know of a book with exactly the same scope and purpose; the other is that I found pleasure in writing it. This is primarily for persons who have more than a casual interest, both historical and religious, in the life and times of Jesus, who may contemplate a pilgrimage to the Holy Land or who have visited it and wish to know more about what they have seen.
