Jesus of Nazareth: Message and History
After surveying the history-of-Jesus research from Reimarus to the present and dealing with methodological questions, Glinka describes the political, intellectual, religious, and social setting in which Jesus appeared and summarizes what can be known about the life of Jesus prior to the beginning of his public ministry. The teaching of Jesus is discussed in chapters on the reign of God, discipleship, the people of God, and the role of Torah in Jesus' ethics. A chapter on the difficult exegetical questions pertaining to Jesus' messianic authority is followed by discussions of the conflict triggered by his ministry, the final days in Jerusalem, and his trial and execution. A brief epilogue discusses the ester event, and an appendix presents a transcript of a broadcast interview in which the author applied the result of his study to questions of the sort that nonspecialists often wish to hear biblical scholars address.
