Jesus the New Elijah According to the Fourth Gospel: A Logical Consequence of John 1:21
During the difficult times under Roman dominion, the hope of the Jews for the coming of the Messiah was intense. Therefore it is not surprising that the activities of John Baptist along the Jordan made the people wonder who John thought he really was. As Luke tells us, 'all men questioned in their heart concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ' (Luke 3:15). Even the Jewish authorities speculated about his identity.
