Marriage has become, especially since the last war, the object of a great deal of lively discussion, which has concerned itself both with the experience of marriage and with our thinking about it. In the past, partly because he had still not attained a truly adult status and partly because of his obedience in faith to the word of God, the Christian layman turned to his priest or minister in his turn tended to fall back on the theology he had been taught as a student at the seminary or theological college. Our present time has, however, witnessed, a complete breakthrough in this monopoly of clerical and theological authority. Experts in many fields among them psychologists, sociologists, phyciatrists, medical practitioners, historians, philosophers and even novelists now have an authoritative contribution to make on the subject, and rightly so.
