Medieval Chinese Society and the Local Community
In recent years Western sinologists have increasingly become aware of the great contribution that Japanese scholars have made to the study of Chinese history and culture. One period of particular Japanese strength has seen only a limited amount of research in the West. This is the nearly four-century hiatus (known as the Six Dynasties era) between the collapse of the Han dynasty in the early third century and the reunification by the Sui at the end of the fifth century.
