Intercultural Relations and Filipino Values
When a person makes the decision to go overseas, it can be a traumatic experience if he does not understand the culture of the host country. But as organizations go International and communication links improve, there is a need for more cosmopolitan managers and professionals who have sympathies, interests and cultures beyond the confines of their native land. Gone are the days when managers and professionals maintain their superiority complex, separate social circles, poor communications and even colonial behavior while in foreign lands. No wonder many attitudes and practices of foreign managers and superiors, even of religious and educational institutions are perceived by the locals as unfair treatment. Success will come to managers who develop transcultural skills of respect, empathy and mutuality to the values locals cherish. Those who fail to grasp this fact, whether business managers, priests, educators, or consultants, remain forever strangers in the global village.
