Modern European Intellectual History
For at least a decade, intellectual historians have had a growing belief that their field is undergoing a far reaching change. The direction of the change is still difficult to discern. But the recent invasion of new theoretical perspectives and research practices from Europe has agitated the whole realm of historical studies. In part because of the very nature of the material with which they work, intellectual historians are especially sensitive barometers of change within the profession. Indeed, they face a peculiar problem comparable to that confronted by anthropologists. To what extent should they go native and come to resemble that often disconcerting tribe the try to scrutinize in scholarly fashion, the intellectuals themselves? The essays in this book focus upon modern European intellectual history, but, explicitly or implicitly, they raise broad issues of method and approach that go beyond the boundaries of specific periods or topics.
