The translator of this book, who is also its publisher, is to be congratulated upon producing the first English edition in the year of the appearance of the first German edition. It is hardly necessary to remark upon the excellence of the translation by John Bowden. The book itself, representing the mature scholarship of its distinguished author, must surely be reckoned one of the most important contributions in our time to the study of the New Testament, reinforced as it is throughout by Professor Jeremias's intimate knowledge of Aramaic and of the Palestinian background the Gospels.
