This first chapter is concerned with the problem of the historical Jesus. I shall concentrate on what for present purpose is the decisive question, that is, whether our sources are sufficient to enable us to bring out the basic ideas of the preaching of Jesus with some degree of probability, or whether this hope is over optimistic from the start.
