It is only fair to advise those who have the hardihood to read essays on psychological theory that fundamentally the science of psychology is an exercise in imagination. whether the formulations advanced by the author are acceptable to the reader or whether they appear to run counter to his common sense depends partly on the degree to which they can be verifed by sound observations and introspections, and partly on the preconceptions the reader may harbour concerning the nature of mind.
