This Man Jesus: An Essay Toward a New Testament Christology

This Man Jesus is a serious investigation into the real percon of Jesus of Nazareth which goes beyond the accounts of the evangelists and the early Christian teachings that have shaped our concepts of Christ. In absorbing detail, noted biblical scholar Bruce Vawter analyzes the Christ portrayed in the gospel stories and then disassociates this interpretation from what he believes Christ must have been in his own time. Similarly, Vawter dismantles historic teachings on the events of Christ's life and what he consiclers to be misguided theories accumulated over the centuries. His aim is to portray the real Jesus in contrast to a Jesus who never was, the Christ of faith mythicized by historicism. In the course of his investigation, the author examines some of the many titles which have been applied to Christ, with a view to determining Christ's place in his own time and his meaning for us today.
