English Prayers of Saint Thomas More
The earliest prayer in time is from a Latin original and concludes St. Thomas's little group of translations connected with John Picus, Earl of Mirandula. when the future martyr came to the conclusion that he was called, not to the cloister, but to life in the world, he sought for a holy and learned layman whom he might put before his eyes as a model, and fixed upon the famous humanist Pico. From this fact and other indications it is probable that the translations were made in or about the year 1505, the year of his marriage.
