The instruction of the Holy office 'On the Ecumenical Movement' demands that Catholic theologians study the movements for Christian unity in the light of the doctrine and principles set forth by the Holy See. In recent years several such studies have been published; not all of them however, even when they intended to present exclusively the Roman standpoint, were based on a sufficient number and an adequate knowledge of the official documents.
