The opportunity of preparing a second edition of this book has enabled me to improve the original in a number of ways. The omission of Cyprian was a serious mistake which I can now make good. Is has been possible to enlarge some other sections of the book, notably those on Teryullian and St John Chrysoston, and make slight improvements to the introduction to some of the documents.
