The Modernist Crisis: Von Hugel
The so-called Modernist crisis earlier in the century is most relevant to the crisis in the church today. Baron Friedrich von Hugel, who was very much ahead of his time, was one of the main people involved, and the issues with which he and his contemporaries were concerned have come full circle. The author outlines the theological background and gives an account of the personalities and questions involved in the Modernist crisis. He ranges over a number of important thinkers, and among the personalities we find von Hugel, wilfred Ward, Loisy, Blondel and Tyrell. As for the issues, we encounter biblical exegesis, the nature of the Church, dogma and authority, and the magisterium. Fr Heany rounds off his book with an evaluation of von Hugel's thought and a sketch of Modernism. It is amazing how relevant the problems of these thinkers are to the Church today and one can be sure that a deeper understanding of von Hugel and his time will help us to understand the present crisis ways towards a solution.
