Readings in Missionary Anthropology; II
Readings in Missionary Anthropology II is organized differently from its predecessor. Paul G. Hiebert has written a new introductory articles for the volume, to set it in perspective. The study of cultural anthropology and its potential contribution to Christian mission continues to change, and Hiebert survey the situation as it has developed, and as it is now. Then volume is divided into two major sections, each with several suctions. 'Cultural systems and manifestations' includes articles on religion, social structure, sex and marriage, myth, and church. 'Cultural processes' includes articles on general themes like change and conversion, communication, missionary agents, and anthropology as culture learning. There is, of course, considerable overlap from category to another. The decision as the where to put an article was sometimes somewhat arbitrary. The categories do, however, reflect to a considerable degree some of the areas the social sciences have a great deal to say to the church. But the discussion of twenty years reflected here is usually surprisingly relevant for anyone engaged in cross-cultural communication today. Each person who leaves the cultural isolation of his own community has to learn for himself the significance of cultural interrelatedness, to respect the cultural heritage of the community into which he is moving , and how communication takes place across cultural differences. The writers in this book have a lot to say to such people.
