The is no part of the New Testament harder for a modern man to understand than the Letters. The Gospels are narrative; the letters are argument; and argument is always more difficult to follow than narrative. And yet the Letters are of the greatest importance for it is in them, and in them alone, that we can trace the development of the Church and the Church's life and faith in the earliest days.
