The Society for Old Testament Study came into being on 3rd January 1917, during the first world war, and throughout the period between the two wars it met regularly twice a year. To assess its service to British Old Testament scholarship cannot be attempted here. Suffice it to say that the fellowship it has promoted amongst Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish scholars, and the stimulus it has provided by the papers read at its meetings would alone have justified its formation.
